September 2023 was another busy month in community activity and outreach by members of Climate Action Burwood-Canada Bay.
ACU Sustainability Day
CABCB had a stall at the Australian Catholic University’s Sustainability Day at their Strathfield Campus. This was the third time we have been invited to ply our wares at one of the uni’s events. Robin, Ellen and Ken promoted CABCB’s campaign against fast fashion, distributing leaflets about climate change, and signing up new supporters.
Cabarita community battery launch
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, unveiled Australia’s first Community Battery in a commissioning ceremony at Kendall Park, Cabarita on Friday 8 September. Minister Bowen was accompanied by Federal Member for Reid, Sally Sitou, and representatives from Ausgrid, and the event was witnessed by members of Climate Action Burwood-Canada Bay (CABCB), Canada Bay Zero Carbon Community (CBZCC), and Inner West Community Energy (IWCE).
Community shadow cabinet
The NSW Opposition held a shadow community cabinet in Drummoyne hosted by local MP Stephanie di Pasqua. Ken and Steven from CABCB together with Jean Hay from the Canada Bay Zero Carbon Community (CBZCC) met informally with shadow ministers in the NSW Parliament, including Matt Kean (former Energy Minister and Deputy Premier; currently Shadow Minister for Health), Mark Speakman (Opposition leader) and James Griffin (Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change), to discuss the Liberal Party’s current position on climate change, renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Rally against coal seam gas
CABCB members were among over a thousand protesters who marched in a rally against Santos’ plans to frack coal seam gas in north-west New South Wales. The marched through Sydney’s CBD stopped outside Santos HQ before proceeding to NSW Parliament House and was attended by climate activists, unionists, farmers, the Gomeroi Traditional Owners and members of the Country Women’s Association.
Walk For Yes
Climate Action Burwood-Canada Bay supports the introduction of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and several of its members took part in an individual capacity in the Walk For Yes through Redfern on September 17.
Presentation at St Mary’s Villa
A new dimension to our community outreach opened up at the end of the month with a visit to an aged care facility to talk climate change. Ken visited St Mary’s Villa, Concord and spoke with fifteen residents who were clearly engaged and interested in the topics raised.
