What we’re doing for the federal election (week 2)

It’s less than four weeks till the Federal Election. Climate Action Burwood-Canada Bay will be out and about spreading the word that to save the climate and keep the cost of living down, Solar Saves, Nuclear Costs.

But to do this, we need your help.

CABCB can’t campaign for or against parties and candidates. But we can praise the good policies of each party, and call out the bad policies and the ugly policies.

And boy there are some ugly policies:

  • Promises of new gas exploration
  • Continuation of fossil fuel mining

And the ugliest of all:

  • Vague promises of a nuclear power industry that will be hugely expensive to build and deliver, will need the shutdown of the solar energy grid, and take so long to develop that the planet will be cooked before the first nuclear plant is ready to be switched on.

What can you do to help?

Join our growing team of volunteers in the Reid electorate.

Register your interest in becoming one of our volunteers by filling in this form . Someone will be in touch, and you will be invited to join our Whatsapp group where our real-time discussion of our election campaigning will happen.

What do we need help with?

  •  Putting flyers in letterboxes across Reid
  • Handing out flyers at railway stations^, public spaces, pre-polling centres
  • Displaying and distributing yard signs (more info later in this email)
  • Talking with people on the theme of our key message
    “Solar Saves, Nuclear Costs”
  • Help with any in-person candidate events (which are still in the planning stage)
  • Monitoring social media and the news for any issues that need a rapid response
  • Can you make short catchy videos for us? We’d love that!

Volunteers can receive a free “Climate Action Now!” cap from us, while stocks last.

^ We intend to target morning peak-hour commuters at the following stations: Croydon, Burwood, Strathfield, North Strathfield, Concord West, Rhodes, Homebush, Flemington.

We need a Federal Parliament that includes people in both houses who will act in the best interest of the climate and deliver plans that reduce our emissions to net zero in the fastest possible time. We’re in a climate emergency. We know that!

Help us to help the voters of Reid make an informed choice on election day.

Please contact our election project manager Rick Eyre if you have any questions.

Oh, and another thing: make sure your enrolment to vote is up to date. You have until 8pm on Monday April 7 to do this, go to the Australian Electoral Commission website aec.gov.au
